Discovering Gansu: A province steeped in history and healing

Gansu, a region rich in history and culture, sits in northwestern China. Its lush, green landscapes and tranquil environment make it a peaceful haven, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the cities. What captivated me most about Gansu, however, was its deep connection to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a centuries-old practice that has been preserved and refined across generations.

Our first destination was a traditional healing center, where ancient wisdom meets modern-day healing. As soon as we entered, a sense of calm enveloped me—a feeling that this place held the secrets of health and wellness. Inside, we observed dedicated doctors and practitioners tending to patients with profound care. The center offered an array of treatments, from herbal medicines to massage therapies and acupuncture, all grounded in the principles of TCM.

A personal encounter with traditional healing

In the acupuncture section of the center, volunteers were invited to experience this ancient practice. Intrigued and eager, I stepped forward. Wooden needles were carefully applied to various pressure points on my back, and then warm wooden rings were placed over them. As the heat spread, a gentle burning sensation seeped through my body, followed by a deep sense of relaxation. After a few minutes, the practitioner removed the rings, revealing small, circular marks on my skin.

With a smile, the practitioner told me, "There is no illness inside you; you are healthy." He explained that my skin's response to the treatment reflected my internal health and that acupuncture could offer insights into one's overall well-being. I was amazed, both by the treatment and the revelation of my good health. This experience deepened my appreciation for China—not just as a global powerhouse, but as a land rich in wisdom, where ancient healing traditions continue to thrive.
