Meet the kiang: Autumn in Gansu's Yanchiwan reserve

As early autumn sets in, the Yanchiwan National Nature Reserve — located in Subei Mongolian autonomous county, Jiuquan, in Northwest China's Gansu province, on the northern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the western stretches of the Qilian Mountains — comes to life with dynamic scenes of wildlife.

Herds of kiangs, a nationally protected first-class species, roam across vast meadows, sometimes galloping freely, other times pausing to play. Their distinct brown-and-white coats stand out against the vast plateau, creating a striking visual contrast. Whether lifting their heads watchfully or playing with one another, each movement paints an endearing portrait of nature in this pristine landscape.
