Gansu province made significant progress in developing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), focusing on services, industry, and cultural integration.

In TCM service system, nearly 300 national- and provincial-level specialty programs have been established. Full coverage has been achieved in providing TCM services at general hospitals, establishing clinics at the primary level, and promoting appropriate TCM techniques.

County-level institutions are now available in 98.8 percent of counties, and TCM services account for 41.2 percent of primary-level healthcare services, making TCM services more accessible and reliable for the public.

New business forms were developed with TCM, including research tourism and cultural creative development. Six editions of China (Gansu) TCM Industry Expo were held, with contracts totaling 89.72 billion yuan ($13.35 billion), as the TCM industry chain reached 110.9 billion yuan in 2025, more than doubling that of 2020.

The province also established 25 education bases, implemented nearly 400 research projects, recognized 16 national TCM talents and 299 provincial masters, and trained over 10,000 apprentices.

Internationally, Gansu explored cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative, with 17 Qihuang centers in 13 countries, offering 256,000 treatments and training over 3,000 individuals. Its medicinal herbs are now exported to 19 countries, with an export value of 542 million yuan.
