During its 219th session on March 27, UNESCO's Executive Board officially endorsed Linxia Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark. This recognition makes Linxia the third geopark in Gansu province to receive such a prestigious global status, following Dunhuang and Zhangye.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are established under the auspices of UNESCO as part of an evaluation system, standing alongside World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves as one of UNESCO's three major designations. These parks are recognized for their geological significance, rarity, beauty, and unique geological features, integrating natural and cultural landscapes into a cohesive natural park.

Among the 18 geoparks newly admitted this round, six are located in China: Changbaishan, Enshi Grand Canyon-Tenglong Cave, Linxia, Longyan, Wugong Mountain, and Xingyi Global Geoparks. With these additions, the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network now encompasses 213 members across 48 countries.

Linxia UNESCO Global Geopark, situated in Linxia Hui autonomous prefecture of Gansu province, spans an area of 2,120 square kilometers across the transitional zone between the arid Loess Plateau and the cold, humid regions of the Tibetan Plateau. The park is distinguished by Cretaceous dinosaur footprints and Late Cenozoic paleontological sites, supplemented by Late Cenozoic strata, northern Danxia landforms, and the Yellow River Gorges. Integrating local ethnic minority cultures, it forms a comprehensive geological park that combines geological, ecological, and cultural elements. The park features 79 sites and over 30 cultural landscapes, including one World Cultural Heritage site, five sites of global scientific value, and one national 5A tourist attraction. With its rare and unique geological relics, diverse and rich cultural landscapes, simple and profound ethnic customs, and stunning natural scenery, Linxia Global Geopark is a prime destination for scientific research, educational outreach, leisure, and experiencing the rich tapestry of multi-ethnic cultures.
