Gansu province recorded 21.12 million tourist visits during the 2026 Spring Festival holiday, generating 12.02 billion yuan ($1.75 billion) in tourism revenue, an increase of 3.07 million visits and 1.99 billion yuan compared to last year.

The province's eight 5A-rated scenic spots and the Mogao Grottoes together received 522,600 visits, a year-on-year increase of 173,700 visits, demonstrating the growing appeal of Gansu's core attractions.

Home to the renowned "Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow" bronze sculpture, Gansu highlighted horse culture throughout the holiday, integrating Silk Road elements into festive celebrations. The Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang hosted an exhibition featuring horse-themed mural reproductions, the Yellow River Tower in Lanzhou presented a light show depicting galloping horses, and the Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park set up photo spots themed "Horse Treading on Danxia", bringing traditional culture to life.

The nighttime economy emerged as a major highlight, with 46 themed lantern festivals, including the Dunhuang Lantern Festival Fair, Lanzhou Old Street light displays, and the Jiayuguan fireworks gala, that illuminated cities across the province and attracted large crowds.

Rural tourism remained vibrant, with Wuwei's specialty foods and local products proving popular, Dingxi and Baiyin organizing agricultural product exhibitions and folk performances, and staying in homestays, savoring local flavors, and buying regional specialties becoming new festive traditions for travelers.

  • China and Kyrgyzstan will jointly formulate regional standards for cultural heritage conservation and carry out three to five demonstration projects in Kyrgyzstan over the next two years under a newly established joint laboratory, according to a meeting held in Lanzhou, Gansu province, on March 21.
